From the beginning, I knew I wanted to make the business as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. I was very conscious of the fact that while the ocean provides us with amazing opportunities for adventure and relaxation, it’s also under massive threat from pollution, climate change, and overexploitation.
I believe that as surfers and water sports enthusiasts, we have a unique responsibility to protect the ocean and minimise our environmental impact wherever we can. That’s why my first batch of surfboards were all bought second-hand. By the time I had finished repairing all the nicks and tears, they looked and performed as good as new! It felt great to be able to give those old boards a new lease of life and keep them from ending up in landfill, where they could take hundreds of years to break down.
Our newest surfboards are from another surf school project, and all last season we used preloved wetsuits that were in great condition. We’ve also recently partnered with a French supplier called SQUID Surfboards who use recycled materials to make the foam cores in their boards.
By taking small but meaningful actions in our business, we aim to reduce our carbon footprint and hopefully inspire positive change here and in the wider surfing community.
Surfing or stand-up paddle boarding, young or old, on your own or in a team – we’ve got something for everyone at Surf’SUP! Grab a board, pull on a wetsuit, and join us on the stunning beaches of West Donegal.
The water’s lovely – come on in!
