My love affair with surfing began back in 2012 in a very unexpected place..

The landlocked town of Athlone in Co. Westmeath. Despite the distance from the coast, I found myself drawn to the waves and eager to give surfing a go.

Armed with a surfboard purchased in Sligo and guided by my brother’s expertise, I discovered the thrill of catching my first wave back home at Dooey beach. From that moment, I was hooked!

My dream was to travel and surf on distant shores, so I headed to Taghazout, Morocco, where I immersed myself in a 12-week surf instructor course. It was quite the culture shock but I enjoyed every minute of it! I had never experienced such good clean swells with no cold harsh winter winds like we have here in Ireland. Surrounded by pristine waves and a vibrant surfing community, I honed my skills and embraced the challenges of mastering the sport.
One of my most memorable waves from Morocco was caught at a surf break called Killer Point, named after the Orca whales that can sometimes be spotted there. The swell was about 8ft high or ‘overhead high’ in surf terms.
I remember my board bouncing down the wave at first and then I managed to get my feet in the right position, make it down and survive without wiping out. I paddled back out to my friends in the line-up and remember shaking with adrenaline, totally stoked!

Two years later, I found myself in Sagres, Portugal, embarking on a full season of surf instructing with Wave Sensations Surf Camp. I loved being a part of Portugal’s rich surf culture, refining my coaching abilities and deepening my connection to the ocean.

Returning home to Donegal, I was inspired to share my passion with others and address the need for adventure sports opportunities in the area. After running into a few obstacles (Covid lockdowns, Brexit, and logistical challenges to name a few), Surf’SUP Surf School was finally ready to go in the second week of August 2021.

At Surf’SUP, we offer a range of experiences tailored to both beginners and seasoned surfers alike. Whether you’re catching your first wave on Dooey or Tramore beaches or embarking on a stand-up paddleboarding excursion along the picturesque Gweebarra Bay, we are dedicated to ensuring a safe, memorable, and rewarding experience.

Beyond the thrill of riding the waves, I believe in the transformative power of water sports to promote physical well-being, mental health, and community connection. The ocean offers a refuge from the stress and uncertainty of everyday life, and it’s right on our doorstep whenever we need it.

Looking ahead to the future of Surf’SUP Surf School, I am grateful for the support of our community and excited for the adventures that lie ahead!
