Just yourself, your swimming gear, a towel and some water. Water-resistant sunscreen is always a good idea too, even in the winter months. We provide you with wetsuits, boards, and all other equipment so you can relax and focus on having fun.
Yes! Our founder and head instructor, Michael, is accredited by the Irish Surfing Association and is also a qualified surf lifeguard. Having grown up here, he has a deep knowledge of the local beaches and surrounding areas, so you know you’re in safe hands!
Beginner surf lessons start out on the beach where we’ll go through some important water safety practices, followed by a short warm-up to get you ready to hit the waves. This is where you’ll practise ‘popping up’ and getting those movements instilled into your muscle memory.
Then it’s into the water to catch your first wave, and with additional coaching in the water you will be gliding along that wave in no time!
Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) lessons start off with a brief introduction to the sport before heading up or down the Gweebarra against the tide. We go for a distance of roughly one or two kilometres and then turn with the tide and the river will bring us back to the start for an easy finish. On Narin strand we can paddle from the beach to the pier or from the beach to the church pool on iniskeel Island. We always take into account the group’s ability and can change the lesson to account for the ability and wants of the group.
You might be surprised to find that SUP is the most relaxing total body workout you can think of! While you don’t feel the workout happening, it builds your core, legs and upper body muscles and can really help your posture and balance. It also really compliments your surfing as your legs are not used as much in surfing as in paddle boarding.
No prior experience is required for our beginner lessons. Our experienced instructors will be on hand to support you every step of the way!
If you are an experienced surfer then advanced coaching can be arranged to help you perfect your skills and pull off manoeuvres like cut-backs, floaters, bottom turns and top turns.
Yes, we offer group lessons for friends, families, and corporate groups. Group sizes may vary, but we ensure personalised attention and instruction for each participant.
The minimum age for surf lessons and camps is 8 years old, and the minimum age for SUP lessons is also 8. There is no maximum age — grandparents and great-grandparents are welcome! Our instructors tailor lessons to accommodate participants of varying ages and skill levels, so rest assured that everyone in the group will have a great time.
Our lessons typically last for approximately 2 hours, including both instruction on land and time in the water.
At Surf’SUP Surf School, your safety is our top priority. Our instructors are certified in first aid and water safety, and we provide all necessary safety equipment, including surfboards, leashes, and buoyancy aids/life jackets for SUP lessons.
In the event of bad weather conditions making it unsafe to surf (or if it’s flat calm and there are no waves), we’ll either reschedule the lesson for a later date or offer alternative activities such as stand-up paddle boarding if conditions permit.
We recommend wearing comfortable gear that is suitable for water activities, such as a swimsuit/board shorts.
Yes, we provide all necessary equipment, including surfboards, wetsuits, paddles, and stand-up paddle boards. If you have your own equipment, you’re more than welcome to use it — just let us know in advance so we can make sure it’s suitable.
